A caster is a wheel and a mount combined into one unit. Casters assist and facilitate the movement of carts, racks, dollies, and other items. Casters are available in a variety of materials, wheel sizes, tread widths, weight ratings, and overall heights to provide mobility to your equipment in a variety of work environments.
Consider the following questions to help you decide which sort of caster is ideal for you:
- What is the weight capacity of the loads that these casters will have to support?
- Is it a wet or oily working environment?
- Is there a risk of being exposed to chemicals or corrosives?
- Will the casters be exposed to a wide variety of temperatures?
- What kind of floor or surface do you need to move across?
- Are you concerned about aesthetics or noise reduction?
- Is it necessary to use brakes?
- Will the casters be utilised for towing with a motor?
- Are you looking for certifications in California Prop 65, NSF for food service, or other standards?
Rigid Casters, Swivel Casters, and Kingpinless Swivel Casters are all manoeuvrable.
There are two types of casters when it comes to manoeuvrability: stiff casters and swivel casters.
Only forward and backward movement is possible with a stiff caster, also known as a fixed caster.
A racetrack on a swivel caster allows the wheel to turn. The raceway is the swivel caster's cylindrical section that houses the ball bearing track or tracks.
A kingpin, which is a bolt or rivet that keeps the raceway together, is used in the classic swivel caster design. The kingpin is subjected to a lot of stress in this design, notably from the shocks that occur when the equipment collides with barriers or when huge weights are thrown on it. As a result, the kingpin is a common source of failure for classic swivel casters.
